UPDATE: Paint bombs....

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

A crowd of about 400 people marched from the public library at 14th and Madison streets toward Frank Ogawa Plaza at about 5 p.m., promising a confrontation with police, who had the plaza barricaded.

The conflict quickly grew violent. When officers in riot gear went to arrest one protester, about 50 more surrounded them shouting, “Let him go, let him go.”

Protesters threw turquoise and red paint at the riot police officers’ faces and helmets. Some led the crowd in chanting, “This is why we call you pigs.” Protesters trying to fight with police were clubbed and kicked in return.

Protesters said police had fired what they described as tear gas into the crowd, although there was no immediate confirmation from authorities. Police also threw flash grenades and shot flash bangs over the protesters.

lberto Ambriz, 39, said he was in the intersection of Eighth and Washington streets when he tried to pick up a tear gas canister. He said he tried to ask police if he could pick it up, but before he could, an officer pushed him and another shot him with a rubber bullet.

They pushed me, they shot me and they tried to arrest me,” the Oakland resident said as he limped down the street.
