4/22/13, "Wife of suspected Boston Marathon bomber faces FBI's heat," NY Post, Celona, Rosario, Greene

"On Saturday, Russell was spotted darting in and out of the Cambridge home she had shared with her husband and his brother.

Friends and neighbors said Russell was raised as a Christian but shrouded herself in Muslim garb after becoming involved with Tamerlan and converting to Islam.

They said she dropped out of college and abandoned dreams of joining the Peace Corps.

‘She was just this all-American girl who was brainwashed by her super-religious husband,” one friend told the Daily Mail. “Nobody understands what happened to her.”...

A neighbor of Russell’s parents told the Mail that the last time she saw Tamerlan was about a year ago and that Russell had “moved back home and was living at home with the baby.”...

Another pipe bomb was found at the brothers’ apartment.

A cop critically wounded in the shootout continued to improve yesterday, after his heart had stopped and he lost nearly all of his blood when a bullet severed three arteries in his right thigh."

In 2010 Tamarlan underwent a jury trial for domestic abuse. The case was eventually dismissed:

"Tamerlan has a domestic violence charge which was dismissed following a jury trial in 2010, according to records and was cited by state police for obstruction of a motor vehicle in 2008. That case was dismissed after he paid court costs."..(item 3/4 down pg.)

"He (Tamarlan) was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend in 2009."...

4/20/13, Was Boston bomber inspired by Russia’s Bin Laden? FBI tracked older brother ‘for FIVE YEARS’ after being told by Moscow of links to Chechen terrorists, UK Daily Mail, Gallagher and Stewart

"He (Tamarlan) was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend in 2009 – which scuppered his chance of obtaining American citizenship.

An intelligence source said: ‘There is a view that this more than anything set him against the USA.’

After his trip to Russia and Dagestan, Tamerlan returned to the US to discover that his mother had been sacked from Lord & Taylor department store in Natick, Massachusetts, for allegedly stealing clothes.

This further enraged him and he became more outspoken in his criticism of America."...

Father: He hit his girlfriend "lightly:"

4/20/13, "Father of Terrorist: 'He Was Locked Up for Half an Hour' Because He Hit Girlfriend 'Lightly'," CNS News

"Anzor Tsarnaev, the father of the Boston Marathon terrorists, told the New York Times in a telephone interview that his elder son's effort to become a naturalized U.S. citizen had been held up because he hit his girlfriend "lightly."

Because of this attack on his girlfriend, Tamerlan Tsarnaev had to spend a half hour in jail, the father told the Times. But he continued to hold a green card and was a legal permanent resident in the United States.

"Because of this girlfriend, he hit her lightly, he was locked up for half an hour," the father told the Times in a story posted Friday. "There was jealousy there."

Nonetheless, according to the Times, Tamerlan Tsarnaev married and had a child."

Cousin: "He used to strike his girlfriend. He hurt her a few times."...

4/19/13, "Relatives of Marathon bombing suspects worried that older brother was corrupting ‘sweet’ younger sibling," Boston Globe, Arsenault et al.

"“I used to warn Dzhokhar that Tamerlan was up to no good,” Zaur Tsarnaev, who identified himself as a 26-year-old cousin, said in a phone interview on Friday from Makhachkala. “[Tamerlan] was always getting into trouble. He was never happy, never cheering, never smiling. He used to strike his girlfriend. He hurt her a few times. He was not a nice man. I don’t like to speak about him. He caused problems for my family.”

Here is a fifth citation about the 2009 abuse reported to police. Also included is friends' account that Tamarlan flew into rages, called Katherine "a slut and a prostitute" and "sometimes threw furniture:"

4/22/13, "Boston bombing suspect's wife 'very distraught,' lawyer says," CNN, Alan Duke

"The couple married on June 21, 2010, according to marriage records at the Cambridge City Hall.
Eleven months earlier [in 2009], Tsarnaev was arrested, accused of domestic assault and battery against his girlfriend at his home in Cambridge, police records said.

The police report was redacted to hide the girlfriend's name, and a police spokesman would not confirm it was Russell.

The woman, who was "crying hysterically," called 911 to report that she was "beat up by her boyfriend" on the afternoon of July 28, 2009, Cambridge Police Officer Angela Pereira wrote in the arrest report.

Tsarnaev told Pereira and another officer that his girlfriend "was yelling at him because of another girl."

"I asked the suspect if he had hit the victim, and he stated 'Yes, I slapped her,'" Pereira wrote.
The girlfriend told police Tsarnaev hit the left side of her face. "No visible marks were seen," Pereira said.

NPR's Laura Sullivan reported Friday on an interview with unnamed women she described as Russell's close friends and college roommates.

"They described Tamerlan as very controlling and very manipulative of their friend," Sullivan said.

"They say he was combative and angry. He would often call (Russell) names and insult her. He would call her a slut and a prostitute, and they remember fights that they would get into where he would fly into rages and sometimes throw furniture or throw things.""...
