"Egypt's public prosecutor has frozen the assets of 14 Islamist leaders, according to judicial sources. The Muslim Brotherhood head Mohammed Badie and his deputy Khairat al-Shater are reported to be among them.

Mr Badie and other Brotherhood figures are already the subject of arrest warrants, while the ousted President Mohammed Morsi remains in custody.

On Sunday, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi defended the decision to remove him from power. In a speech, he also said no group would be barred from politics: "Every political force... must realise that an opportunity is available for everyone in political life and no ideological movement is prevented from participating."

The decision by Egypt's public prosecutor Hisham Barakat to freeze the assets of senior Islamists is part of an ongoing investigation into deadly clashes that have happened since President Morsi was ousted.

According to Egypt's state-run Channel 1 TV, the leader of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party Mohammed Saad al-Katani has also been affected, along with senior figures in rival Islamist groups."

"ElBaradei sworn in as Egypt VP - presidency

Prominent liberal Egyptian leader Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in on Sunday as Egypt's interim vice president for foreign relations, the presidency said in a statement.

The appointment of ElBaradei, a former head of the UN nuclear watchdog and a Nobel peace laureate, follows the military overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

He was initially tipped to lead the cabinet, but his nomination was rejected by the ultra-conservative Salafist party Al-Nur.

ElBaradei was late last year named head of the National Salvation Front, a coalition of leftist and liberal groups, formed in the wake of a power grab by Morsi in November.

Nabil Fahmy, a former Egyptian ambassador to the United States, accepted the post of foreign minister on Sunday in the interim government being put in place after the removal of president Mohamed Mursi earlier this month.

Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi is assembling a government expected to be made up mainly of technocrats and liberals to lead Egypt under an army-backed "road map" to restore full civilian rule."
