The Republican National Committee ended August with $76.6 million in cash reserves, which can be used to aid Romney in the weeks ahead although most of the spending will have to occur independently of his campaign, under federal election rules. By contrast, the DNC had just $7.1 million in available cash at the end of August.

The Democratic National Committee spent heavily to build field operations in August. It transferred 

more than $13.3 million

to state parties in more than a dozen battlegrounds, 

led by the Ohio Democratic Party., which received nearly $2.4 million. 

The RNC sent $6.2 million to state parties last month..

Romney built his staff in August, as he ramped up for the general-election sprint. His campaign had 403 people on the payroll in August, up from 326 a month earlier. 

Obama employed 900 people last month.

On Aug. 31, Romney gave bonuses of $10,000 or more each to nine staffers, filings show. Recipients included political director Rich Beeson, who got $37,500, and campaign manager Matthew Rhoades, who received $25,000.
